Vitra's Plywood Group LCM lounge chair, designed by Charles and Ray Eames, was launched as a new, limited edition in 2017. The new version combines a walnut seat with a black metal frame.
The Plywood Group LCM chair is a member of a timeless series of chairs that Charles and Ray Eames designed in the 1940s. All the chairs share an organic design, comfortable plywood seat and back, and a beautifully shaped metal frame. The letters LCM stand for Lounge Chair Metal.
The plywood and metal parts of the LCM chair are combined with rubber plates which make the structure strong and flexible, and also function as a shock mount between the seat and the frame. The Eames’ were the first designers to use this technique in plywood chairs. The LCM chair is also known as the Potato Chip Chair, as its curved seat and back are said to resemble potato chips.
