The Unikko outdoor rug is decorated with Maija Isola's iconic Marimekko pattern. Unikko came about in 1964 after Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, announced that no floral fabrics would be designed at Marimekko. Maija Isola, however, was not having it and in protest, she designed an entire collection of bold floral patterns – nowadays Unikko is one of Marimekko's most beloved patterns and recognized around the world.
Created in collaboration with esteemed Dutch rugmaker Brink & Campman, this Marimekko rug is hand-tufted from PET yarn. The material is made from recycled plastic bottles, although you might not easily believe it: the texture and appearance are more reminiscent of a traditional wool rug. The color scheme echoes the green, orange, and white hues familiar from other products celebrating the 60th anniversary of Unikko.
