Wooden's Blackbird is a charming, streamlined wooden bird that spreads beauty and a hint of pine forest scent around it. Designed by Ola Kukkasniemi, the Blackbird is produced in a limited, numbered edition, and for each bird sold, 10 euros are donated to the Let’s Save the Old-Growth Forests of Upper Lapland campaign by the Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation. The wooden bird, the size of a real blackbird, is packed in a box filled with wood shavings and comes with a certificate of the donation.
The Wooden OFFCUTS collection uses surplus wood from woodworking shops – for example, the pine used for the Blackbird is leftover material from furniture making and originates from a cut that was made in December 2022 north of Kuhmo. All of Wooden’s timber is sustainably sourced and certified, and using leftover materials makes it even more sustainable.
With the OFFCUTS series, Wooden not only wants to make use of materials that would otherwise go to waste but also to challenge the traditions of the industry. Relying on the concept of Digital Craftsmanship, the items are manufactured as automatically as possible using machining robots and minimizing the amount of handcraft. Thanks to the natural material, each object is still unique with varying colors and wood grain patterns. Pinewood typically also develops a patina over time – the color will turn into a nostalgic honey-like yellow.
