Description

August Eriksson: What Happens When Nothing Happens is a charming photo book featuring photographs by Swedish August Eriksson presenting his hometown of Stockholm in the early hours of the morning. With the help of photographs collected over three years, Eriksson studies observation, movement and the search for meaning in repetition. The work has been published by Art and Theory in collaboration with Skreid Publishing.

What Happens When Nothing Happens is the third book in which Eriksson uses walking as his starting point. The Walk originated with Eriksson walking the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail east of Kyoto, Japan, in 2016. In Circling the Mountain from 2019, Eriksson followed the trail of a wandering monk around Mount Hiei, also near Kyoto.

Now, in What Happens When Nothing Happens, Eriksson walks around his hometown of Stockholm during the summer. The photographs were taken over a period of three years, always at the same time in the early hours around sunrise. Eriksson explores the workings of perception in relation to movement, and our ability to find meaning through repetition. All three books have been listed as ‘Best photography books of the year’ by the Elisabeth Avedon Journal.
