Sera Helsinki's Nurja rug showcases a distinctive feature with the placement of its fringes. Unlike traditional rugs where fringes are typically found on the shorter sides, the Nurja carpet places them on the longer side, adding a unique touch to its design. This unconventional placement, along with variations in the height of the pile, creates a fascinating combination of details that adds character to any room and space.
Designed by Laura Seppänen, the Nurja rug is part of Sera Helsinki's rug collection that is created in collaboration with Finnish women designers. Like other Sera Helsinki rugs, the Nurja is handcrafted in Ethiopia using local, hand-wound sheep wool, which is also spun into yarn by hand. The yarn is not dyed or chemically treated, and the shade of the wool may thus naturally vary slightly from rug to rug, making each rug unique. The surface of untreated sheep's wool contains the wool's own fat, lanolin, which naturally repels dirt, making wool rugs surprisingly easy to keep clean. Please note that the rugs' size may also vary by a couple of centimeters, as the rugs are woven or knotted by hand, according to centuries-old traditions.
