Designer
Rut Bryk (1916–1999) has been dubbed the mother of modern Finnish ceramic art. Originally a graphic artist, Rut Bryk renewed Finnish ceramic arts particularly with her geometric, abstract wall pieces which she composed of three-dimensional ceramic pieces instead of traditional decoration techniques. The new technique enabled her to create large, monumental pieces, some of which can be found e.g. at Helsinki City Hall as well as the Residence of the President of Finland. During her extensive career, the internationally awarded artist often collaborated with her husband, designer and artist Tapio Wirkkala.
