Description

HAY’s Revolt chair is a re-release of a seat designed by Friso Kramer for Ahrend in the 1950s. Over the years, the Revolt chair has become one of Kramer’s best-known works, and it is an excellent example of the designer’s minimalist style.

The gist of the Revolt chair lies in its metal frame, which, a bit unusually, is not made of a metal tube but of a thin, angled steel plate. The unique construction of the frame guarantees not only a distinctive appearance, but also an ergonomic and comfortable sitting position – the backrest tilts slightly when you sit on the chair. In HAY’s re-launched version, the seat and backrest are made of a mix of virgin and recycled ABS plastic. Due to its simple and versatile design, the Revolt chair is just as at home around a dining table as it is in an office or meeting room.

Friso Kramer

Friso Kramer (1922-2019) was one of the essential names of modern Dutch design. A son of the famous architect Piet Kramer, Friso studied architecture in Amsterdam and focused later on industrial design. Since 1948, Kramer worked as a designer for the steel furniture manufacturer De Cirkel, and in the 1950s he was an active member in the Stichting Goed Wonen (Good Living Association), which aimed at postwar reconstruction and improving quality of life by functional design.

One of Kramer’s best-known designs is the Revolt chair from 1953, which gained popularity in both homes and public spaces. Kramer’s awarded designs can be found from the collections of many museums, and he also received the title “Royal Designer for Industry” from the Royal Society of Arts in London.
