Description

In Vitro Unplugged from Flos is a fascinating cordless luminaire created by French designer Philippe Starck. The portable, rechargeable lamp is shaped like a lantern, and it is specially designed for outdoor use. At full charge, the luminaire will light up your garden or patio for up to 6 hours.

The light emitted by In Vitro Unplugged is soft and gentle, with its tiny Edge LED light sources hidden from view at the top so that the light looks glowing inside the luminaire as if by itself. “Since forever, the lightbulb is protected by a glass globe. Today, this disappears in favor of the light,” Starck himself has said about the design. “It is the both poetic and surrealistic idea of dematerialized architectural lighting and the memory of the space occupied by the light.”

Philippe Starck

The french designer Philippe Starck (b. 1949) studied in École Nissim de Camondo in Paris and stayed in Paris after his studies. He became famous for his style and even the president Francois Mitterand asked him to design a suite to his palace. Starck became one of the most famous designers of that time and designed everything from apartment blocks, homes, domestic products and hotels.

In the 80s and 90s Starck started working for Kartell. The cooperation was built on the company’s will to create eco-friendly, contemporary plastic furniture and the designer's particular style. One of the most iconic designs of our time, the transparent Louis Ghost chair, was one of the results of the cooperation with Kartell.
