Description

Skargaarden’s Kryss lounge chair was created in the 1970s when designer Björn Hultén was commissioned to design the interior of the Swedish embassy in Cairo. For the embassy’s rooftop terrace he designed a series of foldable wooden chairs that were inspired by his visit to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo: the Kryss chair’s design is a reference to a chair he saw there, made of ebony and decorated with gold and ivory, that was found in Tutankhamun’s tomb.

The teak Kryss chairs are perfect not only for diplomats but also for terraces, patios and gardens of regular homes. The Sunbrella Heritage fabric of its seat and backrest is ideal for outdoor use and due to its foldable structure, the chair can easily be stored away for winter. If you live in a warmer climate where it does not snow in the winter, you can even leave the chairs outside all year round! As is typical of outdoor teak furniture, the chair will eventually weather to a distinguished silvery grey.

Björn Hultén

Björn Hultén (1928–2008) was a Swedish interior architect who had the honour of designing the facilities of many Swedish embassies around the world, including the ones in Moscow, Washington and Cairo. As a furniture designer Hultén is best known for his numerous chair designs – throughout his career, he designed over 200 chairs, the most famous of which is perhaps the H55 easy chair, designed in 1955. His Kryss safari chair, designed in the 1970s for the Swedish embassy in Cairo, is also one of his most beloved and well-known designs.

Hultén has been described as an uncompromising designer who always aimed at timelessness instead of following trends. An idealist at heart, he had a strong drive to pass on his knowledge and experience to younger generations of architects and designers; Hultén was also a professor at the School of Design and Crafts at the University of Gothenburg.
