The Swan pendant lamp by Tunto combines modern LED technology with a minimalist form that draws from the legacy of Finnish design. Conceived by Mikko Kärkkäinen in 2015, Swan is inspired not only by nature but also by the work of old masters: Kärkkäinen has named Tapio Wirkkala as one of his biggest sources of inspiration.
When designing Swan, Kärkkäinen wanted to mould an appealing object with certain plasticity and sculptural character – to create a contrast between the material and the form. Crafted in Finland, Swan's shade is made of bent oak plywood with a distinct curve in the middle that makes the lamp resemble the wings of a swan spread out in flight. The airy appearance of the luminaire is underlined by the dimmable light gleaming from the centre of the curved wood board.
