Description

Vitra’s Uten.Silo RE I is a beautiful and practical storage unit for small items. Designed by Dorothee Becker in 1969, the Uten.Silo I organiser helps to bring order in the kitchen, bathroom, hall, office, and children’s room – in fact, the characterful small lockers and hooks work wonders in any room and interior, both at home and in the office! Uten.Silo RE I is made of recycled post-industrial ABS plastic.

Originally created for Design M and currently produced by Vitra, the Uten.Silo has found its way to numerous homes worldwide. Dorothee Becker is known to have revealed that she drew inspiration for the Uten.Silo from a textile organiser hanging on the wall of her father’s pharmacy when she was little. The pockets were filled with extraordinary items and fun surprises – much like the Uten.Silo.

Dorothee Becker

Dorothee Becker (1938–2023) is best remembered for her 1969 design of the Uten.Silo storage organiser, which is now produced by Vitra. Before her career as a designer, the German-born Becker studied languages and lived in cities such as London and Paris, eventually moving to California in 1960. Upon returning to Germany with her husband, lighting designer Ingo Maurer, she opened a design shop in Munich, which she ran until 1989. Although Becker was a completely self-taught designer, she still made a significant impact on the design world – Uten.Silo is a recognised design classic and is part of the collection at New York's MoMA.
