Marimekko's Piirto Unikko coffee cup features the iconic floral pattern by Maija Isola in a fun new interpretation: you can only see the outlines of the famous flowers! Designed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Unikko pattern, the ceramic cup is part of the Oiva tableware range, designed by Sami Ruotsalainen, and is easily combinable with monochrome dishware as well as other Marimekko patterns. All fans of Finnish design surely recognise Unikko, but have you ever heard the story behind the pattern? Maija Isola created it in 1964 after Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, had publicly announced that no floral fabrics would be printed at the design house. Isola did not accept these rules and restrictions without a fight and, in protest, ended up designing an entire collection of bold floral patterns. One of these designs was Unikko – which quickly became a favourite of Ratia, too. Today, Unikko is one of Marimekko's best-known and most beloved patterns worldwide.
