Fredericia’s Wegner 1788 easy chair is a Danish classic designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1974. The chair boasts a simple and airy design, typical of Wegner, and is made of wood, the favourite material of legendary Danish designer. Thanks to the beautiful design of the backrest, the chair can be placed anywhere in the room. “A chair should have no back side. It should be beautiful from all sides and angles,” Wegner has famously said.
Although the current shape of the chair dates back to the 1970s, the Wegner 1788 armchair was actually first designed as early as 1945. That year, Wegner held a joint exhibition with another Danish legend, Børge Mogensen, and designed the Wegner 1788 easy chair for the exhibition as a companion for Mogensen’s Spoke-Back sofa. Wegner updated the design in 1974, giving it the shape we have come to know and love.
