Description

Arabia’s Pyörre mug, named after the Finnish word for “whirl”, is decorated with an abstract pattern created by Esteri Tomula. The intricate black-and-white pattern is a typical example of the prolific designer’s work, bearing a striking resemblance to Arabia’s Moreeni, also drawn by Tomula. Unlike the similar graphic line-drawn design, Pyörre, however, did not make it into production.

In 2021, the pattern was dug up from Arabia’s archives and paired with a modern, clean-lined form. Thanks to its simple shape, the mug easy to combine not only with the other designs of Arabia’s Beloved Patterns collection but also with any minimalist, unicolour dishware. The Pyörre mug is made of dishwasher, oven, microwave and freezer proof vitro porcelain – an extremely functional material perfect for everyday use.

Esteri Tomula

Esteri Tomula was a Finnish artist who worked for the design brand Arabia for almost 40 years. She graduated from University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1947, and began working as a decorator for Arabia the same year. Tomula was particularly known for abundantly decorated, expertly drawn designs often based on the natural world. During her long and productive career, Tomula designed many beloved decorations, including the ones adorning the Vegeta enamel pots by Finel and the Botanica wall plates by Arabia.
