Description

Vitra’s Moca chair is a great example of the “supernormal” design of British designer Jasper Morrison, which emphasizes usability, responsibility and a simple design language without unnecessary gimmicks – yet is always honed to perfection. Designed in 2020, Moca was created to last from generation to generation both in terms of quality and its timeless aesthetics.

Moca’s frame consists of two metal tubes, one of which forms its rear legs and the other the front legs as well as the backrest support. The seat and backrest are made of veneered plywood, which makes the chair light and therefore easy to move or stack. Peeking under the chair reveals an inconspicuous but practical detail, very typical of Morrison: the bottom of the seat is covered with a handy guard that prevents the veneer surface from being scratched when the chair is stacked.

Jasper Morrison

Jasper Morrison (b. 1959) is one of the most successful industrial designers of his generation. He is known for an aesthetic and quietly humorous style that often aims at understated everyday functionality. A graduate from the Kingston Polytechnic and Royal College of Art, Morrison opened his own studio in London in 1986, and today he has offices also in Paris and Tokyo. He has designed products from tableware to tram systems and collaborated with brands such as Alessi, Vitra, Nikari, Flos, Fredericia and Iittala. Morrison’s work has been exhibited around the world, and in 2001 he was awarded the Royal Designer for Industry distinction by the British Royal Society of Arts.
