Iittala’s Annual Cube 2024 features a deep blue abstract shape decorated with white mushroom-like shapes – or do you perhaps interpret them as leaves or flowers? The cube is handmade and therefore the details may be larger or smaller, fewer or denser than pictured – each cube is a unique piece of glass art.
Designed by professor Oiva Toikka, Iittala’s annual glass cubes have been in production since 1977. At the Iittala glassworks, master glassblowers craft each one individually using the demanding paperweight technique in which the colours and decorations are added to the cube layer by layer, ending with clear glass. When the molten glass has set and cooled down, the cube is ground and polished to reveal unique and detailed microscopic worlds captured inside. Each annual cube is made in a limited edition of 2000 numbered pieces, and its design and colours match the annual bird and egg of the same year.
