Description

J42 chair is HAY’s relaunch of Børge Mogensen spindled armchair. Made of solid oak wood, the J42 chair’s lightweight yet stable structure makes it an excellent dining chair, and the backrest and armrests add comfort to the seating pose. J42 merges together the most essential elements of Scandinavian design: beauty, durability and functionality.

J42 chair is part of HAY's 2011 relaunch of the Danish furniture classics originally made for FDB, the Danish Consumers’ Co-operative Society. FDB’s furniture production started in the 1940s and their main idea was functionalist and democratic design for the people. Thanks to industrial production, FDB was able to manufacture high-quality design furniture for everyone at relatively low prices.

In 2021, HAY renewed the surface treatments of its wood furniture by replacing their paints and lacquers with more environmentally friendly, water-based alternatives. Please note that due to this, natural wood furniture now comes with only one lacquer option instead of the previous two: the new water-based lacquer is glossier than the matte lacquer previously used, but slightly more matte than HAY’s previous clear lacquer.

Børge Mogensen

Danish furniture designer Børge Mogensen (1914 –1972) was one of the most influential designers of the Danish modern. Mogensen studied furniture design at Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and his designs aimed at functionality, minimalist appearance and easy accessibility. Soon after his graduation Mogensen was named the chief of Danish Consumers’ Co-operative Society FDB, which focused on producing functional, durable and affordable furniture for all social classes.

Mogensen’s designs were often extremely modest and confident at the same time, and the same goes for his personality. Mogensen preferred to work with traditional and natural materials, but also liked to experiment with new techniques and supported the industrial production of furniture. His work was also influenced by folk art, lithography and Japanese wood carvings. During his career Mogensen was awarded with the Eckersberg Medal and C.F. Hansen Medal, and in 1972 he was named Honorary Royal Designer for Industry by the British Royal Society of Arts.
