Description

HAY's Pyramid bench, originally designed by Wim Rietveld for Ahrend in the 1950s, was reintroduced in 2017 through a collaboration between HAY and Ahrend. The Pyramid bench 12 pairs perfectly with tables from the same series, but also works well as a standalone seat or a low side table.

Featuring angular steel frames and sturdy wooden tops, the Pyramid collection embodied the cutting-edge steel design of the 1950s and has maintained its timeless appeal ever since. Over the decades, these pieces have become familiar fixtures in both public spaces and private homes. The reissued furniture by HAY now uses an eco-friendly water-based lacquer.

Wim Rietveld

Wim Rietveld (1924–1985) was a Dutch designer and son of the notable architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld. Like his father, Wim Rietveld carried on the tradition of groundbreaking furniture design. In the 1950s, Rietveld studied industrial design at the Hague Academy, and like many designers of the post-war era, he focused on functional minimalism with easily accessible materials.

Rietveld became famous for his stackable furniture and creating functional solutions for mass production. He also worked as the Head of Industrial Design at the University of Delft. Rietveld’s 1407 armchair won the gold medal at the 10th Milan Trienalle, and several of his designs, such as the Result chair and the Pyramid collection, have won the Signe d’Or award.
