Marimekko fabrics – timeless classics and modern interpretations straight from Finland
Marimekko fabrics are renowned for their bold and colourful patterns, bringing joy and energy to every home. At Finnish Design Shop, you can find both the iconic classics and the latest designs in durable materials such as cotton and linen. Marimekko fabrics are not only designed but also produced in Finland – most of the fabrics are printed in Helsinki.
Founded in 1951, Marimekko quickly gained international acclaim for its bold and colourful patterns. The founder Armi Ratia and Maija Isola, the head designer for 38 years, created many legendary Marimekko prints in the 1950s and 1960s. Notable designers like Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi and Annika Rimala, known for their graphic style, and Fujiwo Ishimoto, whose fabrics combine Japanese and Finnish aesthetics, helped establish Marimekko's identity.
Among Marimekko's 21st-century designers, Maija Louekari and Aino-Maija Metsola are known for creating many beloved patterns.
