Iittala presented its new range for spring 2020 at the Amos Rex museum in Helsinki at the end of October. With the new range, Iittala urges us to flex our green thumb and let nature in.
IITTALA’S NEW PRODUCTS for spring 2020 emanate the serenity of Nordic nature. With the new range, Iittala wants to remind us of the importance of nature – of feeling connected to it and the effect it can have on our wellbeing. In addition to spending time outdoors, one can feel closer to nature by making their home greener with flowers and plants. A natural atmosphere at home can be achieved with soft, calming colors, lush houseplants, and harmonious flower arrangements.
Ceramic additions to the Nappula and Ruutu collections
For indoor plants, Iittala introduces ceramic Nappula plant pots with a minimalist look and curved shapes familiar from other products of the Nappula collection. Swedish designer Matti Klenell got the inspiration for the rounded silhouettes of the collection when he was working in Finland in the Nuutajärvi Glass Village and happened to come across an old, peculiar table with round legs. The pots’ playful form and sturdy stem make them fun yet stylish containers for all houseplants.
The Nappula collection represents the strong Nordic design language typical of Matti Klenell.
The Ruutu collection, designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, will also expand with ceramic vases in the collection’s distinctive diamond shape. The sculptural vases are perfect for creating beautiful arrangements with flowers and branches either as stand-alone pieces or combined with the glass Ruutu vases. The new ceramic Ruutu vases are hollow cast and finished by hand.
A touch of whimsy à la Oiva Toikka
The Birds by Toikka collection’s new annual bird for 2020, Kaisla, is a reflection of designer Oiva Toikka’s unlimited imagination and boundless love for nature. Kaisla’s duck-like silhouette and calming colors evoke images of placid forest ponds and serene evenings by the lake. The beautiful, calming shades are repeated in the new Annual Egg and Annual Cube.
Art glass fans will also be delighted to know that Iittala will relaunch Oiva Toikka’s whimsical Fruits and Vegetables art collection from 1989. Iittala will reintroduce seven pieces from the collection: Aubergine, Grape, Onion, Pumpkin, Zucchini as well as Apple which will be available in two colors. The Frutta collection, designed in 1968, is another great example of Toikka’s playful style. In 2020, Iittala will relaunch the Frutta pitcher and tumblers. These designs by Toikka will only be available at Iittala’s own stores.
A new, higher Aalto and annual color linen
The beloved Aalto collection will get a new member next spring as Iittala brings back a classic from the archives: a 270 high Aalto vase known as ”model 3032”. The new vase is particularly well suited for higher flowers and lush arrangements and, like all Aalto vases, is mouth-blown at the Iittala glass factory in Central Finland.
Along with the new Aalto vase, Iittala also introduced its new annual color for 2020, linen. The fresh, natural hue recalls flax fields and the cool, fresh feel of linen clothes on a hot summer’s day. In addition to the Aalto collection, linen will be available in a range of products including tumblers, votives, and Kastehelmi vases, among others.
New collection Kuru
The same themes of de-stressing and tranquility continue in the new Kuru collection, also available next spring. Designed by Philippe Malouin, the new collection consists of geometric bowls in different sizes, designed to keep homes peaceful and clutter-free – the bowls allow you to organize and display your belongings in an interesting way instead of having them scattered around on tables, shelves, and other surfaces.
The Kuru collection is designed to help you declutter and create harmony in your home.
In addition to ceramic bowls, the Kuru collection includes a small glass bowl and a mouth-blown vase. All pieces come in calming, natural hues according to Iittala’s nature-inspired theme.
Designer Philippe Malouin is a firm believer in the calming power of simple shapes. He thinks Kuru’s forms will also help in creating a harmonious atmosphere. ”Kuru’s geometrical shapes bring tranquility. People have an inlaid understanding of simple geometric forms from a really young age and we find understandable design calming,” says Malouin.
