Happy birthday, J39 Mogensen! The star of the show celebrates its 75th anniversary with a new version, inspired by the original 1947 design.
J39 MOGENSEN is a classic piece of Danish design, adored both at home and abroad. Designed by Børge Mogensen, one of Denmark's greatest furniture designers, the iconic chair is now celebrating its 75th birthday.
The J39 chair has become known for its creative combination of two different natural materials: a sturdy, solid wood frame meets a handwoven paper cord seat.
In the 75th anniversary version, the seat is made of sustainable sedge grass instead of traditional paper cord – just like the original J39 chair, which designer Mogensen himself also had in his living room.
The J39 chair has been in continuous production since its design, throughout its 75-year history. The chair was originally part of a collection designed for the Danish Consumer's Co-operative Society to provide practical, durable, and affordable furniture for all Danish people. Børge Mogensen was the director of FDB in the 1940s.
Through the years, the beloved J39 has also earned the nickname ‘The People’s Chair’. Today, the People's Chair is part of the collection of the Danish furniture manufacturer Fredericia.
A timeless and organic combination of natural materials, the J39 chair works perfectly as a dining chair as well as in the living room or office. The minimalistic, even puristic look of the chair is also ideal for public spaces such as restaurants or hotels.
