Hali Mason’s home in Manchester exudes calm and reflects her love for pure, pared-down design. Here she shares with us six of her favorite items for winter home decor.
PHOTOGRAPHER AND INTERIOR STYLIST HALI MASON gave up her career in the legal sector to dedicate herself to interiors and design. With a passion for timeless furniture and interiors, Hali picked her favorite items that survive trends and are therefore perfect long-term investments.
Hello Hali, thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Could you please briefly introduce yourself and tell us about the path that led you to where you are today?
“Hello! I am originally from East Africa but moved to London as a child. Currently, I’m based in Didsbury, Manchester. I worked in the legal sector for many years but after my first trip to Milan Design Week, I decided I had to make a change and started to explore my love of design. I now style and photograph interior products for a variety of brands.”
Do you have a dream creative project or collaboration?
“My dream creative project would be a forever home designed in collaboration with Norm Architects. In my opinion, they are the masters of curating spaces that are functional and where each object is beautiful yet perfectly necessary. ”
What does good design mean to you? What makes a design classic?
“Good classic design for me is simple and well-made but also functional. I find that these three features in a design can often result in an object which survives trends and is, therefore, a worthwhile long-term investment.”
Hali Mason’s 6 picks for the winter season:
1. For seasonal arrangements
“For me, Georg Jensen’s vases lend themselves so well to winter scenes. I love to style the HK vase, designed by Henning Koppel, on my dining table with beautiful evergreen foliage or branches of red winter berries from my garden.”

2. Breakfast in bed
“Nikari’s Alvar tray, designed by Alvar Aalto himself, is something I would love to own! I can image using this while having breakfast in bed on those cozy mornings that only happen around this time of year.”

3. For children
“Woud’s Nunu elephant by Steffen Juul is such a great gift for anyone but especially for children. The elephants come in different sizes and are a stylish yet fun way to decorate any child’s bedroom or playroom. I have a few in my own child’s room and they always bring a smile to my face.”

4. Greetings from Japan
“Iwatemo is a brand I loved ever since meeting them at an opening event in Stockholm. There is so much history and craftsmanship to their designs. I would love to gift the cast iron HK kettle by Harri Koskinen to someone. A kettle is something many people use every day so it would be such a special thing to share with a special person.”

5. For dark evenings
“When nights are chilly, I often curl up on a comfortable chair and dim my Blossi floor lamp, designed by Sofie Refer for Nuura. It gives off such a warming light and the Nordic gold finish evokes festive feelings.”

6. Shades of orange
“This little bowl Kuru bowl, designed by Philippe Malouin for Iittala, is such a gorgeous design, and the Seville orange color really brings a wintery feel for me. It is chic and decorative but also super functional.”
