Arabia’s new seasonal series Snow Moonlight draws from Tove Jansson’s book Moominland Midwinter, where Moomintroll experiences winter for the first time in his life. The new tableware collection is available from October 2021.
TOVE JANSSON’S beloved Moomin book Moominland Midwinter (1957) has provided inspiration for already 16 seasonal dinnerware sets, designed by Arabia’s illustrator Tove Slotte since 2006. The 2021 winter set shows the magical yet sometimes harsh side of winter.
The Snow Moonlight theme originates from the first illustration in the book Moominland Midwinter, where the moonlight awakens Moomintroll from his hibernation. The Moomins usually sleep through the winter, but Moomintroll is unable to get back to sleep, so he stays awake and goes exploring the snow-covered Moominvalley.

The other side of the Snow Moonlight mug and bowl shows Moomintroll wrapped in his bathrobe together with Little My and a new friend, Too-ticky. Moomintroll has found his bathrobe in the bathhouse closet and wears it until his winter fur grows a little thicker and warmer. All three stand by the seashore, staring into the distance at the mystical Snowhorse – a horse made of snow, which suddenly came to life and galloped away.
Tove Jansson was a master in creating delicate illustrations of the weather and the seasons with only a few fine lines. In the illustration on the Snow Moonlight collection, lines are used skilfully to bring alive the story’s atmosphere. The calm blue color scheme is a perfect match for the enchanting winter story.
The Snow Moonlight collection consists of a mug, a bowl, a mini mug set and a spoon set. The collection will be available for a limited time starting from October 1st, 2021.
