Festive decor the Marimekko way: Bows on the tree and gold on the table!

Deck your table and the tree with Marimekko’s classic patterns! Together with the Finnish design house, we’ve gathered the best tips for making this holiday season merry, mellow and memorable.

Marimekko holiday 2023
Holiday celebrations can be enjoyed in many ways, but the most essential thing is to have fun, says Marimekko. And we agree, of course!

LIFE IS A PARTY, say our friends at Marimekko, and each new moment brings new reasons for joy and celebration. However you intend to spend the holiday season ahead, be sure to make it fun! Create a festive yet relaxed atmosphere in jolly style à la Marimekko, with accents of classic red and gold, avant-garde table settings and comfy cushions for leisurely lounging. And savor every second!

Marimekko holiday 2023: Unikko throw, white - black
Embrace elegance and adorn your tree with charming fabric bows. Complete the enchanting scene by placing beneath the tree, perhaps, a cozy Unikko blanket.

1. Classic patterns for the Christmas tree

This year, trend-savvy decorators bedeck their trees with adorable bows and ribbons. If you tend to save and reuse wrapping materials, satin ribbons from last year will do the trick – and do it well, might we add – but you could also use fabric scraps from DIY projects. Go all in and let other baubles have a rest this year, if you dare.

Finnish Design Shop’s selection features a range of Marimekko fabrics from forever favorites like Unikko and Tiiliskivi to fresh arrivals like this season’s newcomer Peura. And hey! If sewing is not your thing, the web store also carries a few ready-made curtains. Maybe don’t cut them up for the tree, though…

As the focal point of your table setting, consider an exquisite cheese tower. Add a touch of sparkle with the Oiva Tiiliskivi dishes in glistening gold.

2. Try something new in your table setting

Dare to be different and try something entirely new for your festive table setting. A champagne tower is a classic, but, be honest, how many times have you actually built one? Or if you want to go more avant-garde, how about an elegant cheese tower instead?

Those not fond of champagne or cheese can experiment with the table setting by mixing Oiva tableware in different colours and patterns. Marimekko believes that the quickest way to make something festive is to add a bit of glimmering gold, and therefore their holiday range features the Tiiliskivi and Kuusikossa patterns with gorgeous gold accents. Put any of these seasonal treats under the tree and make your fellow Marimekko fans jump for joy.

Can there be too many throw cushions on the sofa? You can probably guess what our opinion is!

3. Set the scene for lounging

Create a cozy nest for lounging by piling blankets and throw cushions on the sofa. Bold patterns instantly revamp the home for the festive season and continue to bring a smile to your face even after the holidays. If the sofa is fully occupied, place some cushions on the floor to build an improvised lounging spot. Or use a Puffi floor cushion!

Marimekko holiday 2023: Seireeni fabric, red - burgundy - cotton
There's no need to shy away from red: thoughtfully coordinated, it fits any season. In the Seireeni fabric, red is complemented by burgundy and the natural tone of cotton.

4. Dress your home in red

Marimekko often relies on classic red in its holiday collection, making it easy to create a festive atmosphere at home. However, many of the pieces aren’t all red, making them also suitable for year-round use. For example, curtains made from the Seireeni fabric or the fall arrival 2023 Kalendi cushion cover work well beyond the holiday season.

5. Slip into your favorite sheets

Whether your day has been filled with jingles and bells, or peaceful moments and me-time, there's nothing better than slipping into fresh, comfy sheets at the end of the day. Marimekko offers duvet covers suitable for both single and double beds, along with matching pillowcases in classic patterns. Put on your pajamas and snuggle under the sheets – or perhaps you’ve spent the entire day in your jammies or a robe. We probably have, to be honest!

Marimekko holiday 2023
Whether you celebrate by dancing into the early hours, gathering around a shared table, or simply relaxing on your own, the most important thing is to enjoy yourself!

6. Our main tip: take it easy!

The most important tip of all is to celebrate your own way, take it easy, and remember to savor every moment. The same applies to post-celebration chores: put on some festive tunes, pour yourself a cup of mulled wine, and let future you take care of the clean-up.
