Before and after: How our interior designer created a remote workstation in a bedroom

Finnish Design Shop Studio created a stylish and functional workstation in the corner of a bedroom. See the fabulous result and be inspired by the interior designer’s furnishing choices!

A remote workstation
Created in the bedroom of an old house, the remote workstation has a modern look but is still in tune with the atmosphere of the home.

A SEPARATE STUDY is not always possible even in larger homes, and in older houses in particular the number of rooms can be quite small in relation to the overall area. The rooms, on the other hand, can be very spacious, like the bedroom in this home.

If the number of functions is more important than the number of rooms, different uses can be planned for the same space, for example for day and evening. With the right storage solutions and stylistic choices, a workstation need not disturb the tranquil atmosphere of the bedroom.

An unused corner of a bedroom had become home to a number of potted plants.

Starting point: A corner occupied by green plants

The client’s bedroom had a spacious corner opposite the bed, which was filled with houseplants when not in use. Now that the home needed a separate remote workstation, it was natural to find places for the plants in other rooms and design a functional and ergonomic furnished space to replace them.

The starting point was Artek's Kaari desk already purchased by the client. The design was executed by Finnish Design Shop Studio interior design service, and three superb products from the Finnish Design Shop range were chosen to complete the desk.

Plan: Stylish and functional

The aim was to build a workstation that is functional and ergonomic, but not too office-like. It was also important to keep the bedroom tranquil. This meant that, for one thing, a conventional adjustable office chair was ruled out.

The workstation also needed to have some storage space. The desk itself has no drawers or cabinets, so the solution had to be set up using other design items. As the corner is quite dark for part of the day, it was important to have good lighting at the workstation.

The furniture was designed around a black Kaari desk from Artek.

The designer’s task was to choose a work chair, storage furniture and a lamp for the corner. The swivel chair selected was the Aleta chair designed by Jaime Hayón for Viccarbe. The chair’s black leg pairs well with the Kaari desk, and its upholstered seat, reminiscent of a small armchair, is just the right stylistic departure from an office chair.

The attractive design of &Tradition’s off-white Rotate SC73 side table makes a fantastic workstation storage solution. The metal structure has wheels underneath, so the table can be moved around as needed. And the items stored can be easily hidden by rotating the table into different positions.

For efficient and glare-free working light, the classic Tolomeo table lamp from Artemide swivels and bends in many directions. This aluminum lamp adds a nice touch of life to a dark desk, and matches it in size.

The new workstation is a pleasure to work at, and its beautiful storage features are a feast for the eyes. The blue wall paint is De Nimes by Farrow & Ball.

The end result: A workstation that meets every wish

The new workstation is located neatly in the corner of the bedroom, contrasting wonderfully with the broken blue hue of the wall. The fact that the wall is quite dark and that the contrast with the desk is not too dramatic also makes the black Kaari desk look less massive.

Most importantly, the workstation is very functional in its simplicity and meets the expectations set for it. It’s easy to tidy away everything at the end of the work day, leaving the bedroom with a calm feel and ready for rest.
